RECYCLING BIN (Build Infrastructure Now)
Help Create Jobs and Reduce Green House Gas Emissions
The Mandatory Commercial Recycling (MCR) Measure, soon to be available for official public comment at the California Air Resources Board, focuses on increased commercial waste diversion as a method to reduce greenhouse gas emissions under California’s landmark Global Warming Solutions Act (AB 32). To achieve the measure’s objective, an additional 2 to 3 million tons of materials will need to be recycled annually from the commercial sector by the year 2020.
Currently, approximately 5-20% of the recyclable materials collected in California remain in the State for remanufacturing; the majority of the recycled materials are shipped to other parts of the United States or to global markets. In other words 80-95% of our recyclable materials are leaving California, specifically heading to overseas markets. So, too, are the jobs, tax revenues, and commerce that could come from processing and using these materials for manufacturing locally.
The Recycling BIN (Build Infrastructure Now) Coalition proposes that we move towards eliminating the word ‘waste’ from our vocabulary and begin seeing these materials as resources/feedstock for other products. To accomplish this goal a dramatic restructuring of our integrated waste management collection, diversion, and disposal system to a materials management system must occur.
Please join our statewide coalition in formulating bridge strategies for transitioning our present system. Help us develop domestic infrastructure and keep our recyclables here, putting Californians back to work with sustainable green jobs and cutting greenhouse gas generation at the same time.
